Rummaging through old DVDs, I found this:

Arden's Corner

One of the videos inside is this:

tl;dw: “buy the gold disc and not the purple one because it’s high quality”. Quite rich coming from a pirated DVD.

Since the video makes much ado about the color of the recording surface, it made me wonder if gold-coloured CDs/DVDs are superior from non-gold-coloured ones. Ecosia yielded these forum threads. tl;dr: the colour, due to real gold, does not matter quality-wise; what matters is the mastering procedure. Which really makes sense. So yes, the video does have a point that original DVDs are better than DVD-Rs, assuming that original DVDs mean those coming from the recording studios and DVD-Rs are common consumer-grade DVDs used by basement-grade pirates.

For the record, here is the disk’s recording surface.

Arden's Corner

This also made me think about the +/- kerfuffle. As usual, Technology Connections have done a video about it.

tl;dr: due to a petty format war, though technically different it does not matter to the end user.

Extra notes:

  • For those shouting that I’m mishandling the disk by putting it on the floor recording-side-down and why does the recording surface looks so dirty and scratchy: the disk’s already failing; I can’t reliably copy all of its contents anymore. And it’s a pirated DVD; does it really matter?
  • For those shouting why I have this pirated disk: it’s quite common here in the Philippines for poor people to buy/lend pirated media than pay for originals or watch then in movie theatres. The poor do not have a lot of disposable income, after all. More pertinent if you live in an impoverished part of a province. So there you go.
