Was scavenging through old documents, and found these newsletters by section Tan during DOST-SOEP, 2007.

This was mainly the work of one classmate (forgot his name, sorry), perhaps mainly out of boredom. All rights go to him; I just scanned my copy for digital preservation. If you’re reading this, email me so I can credit you properly.

As a background, DOST-SEI offers a college undergrad scholarship program to those who can pass their examination. Since we were not that privileged financially, I was forced by my parents to take the exam, which I fortunately passed. Don’t be fooled though; I was quite the mediocre scholar and I can’t really use this for bragging rights.

DOST-SOEP is conducted on the summer before the first semester of a scholar’s freshman year, so as to ease “culture shock” (that’s what we’re told). As per my experience, it’s essentially a two-month crash course of Math and English subjects done inside UP Diliman.

The 2007 batch of UP Diliman DOST-SEI scholars were divided into four sections, depending on the score they got on the exam on the first day of DOST-SOEP. In order of for those who got the highest scores (read: smartest) to lowest (read: dumbest), the sections are:

  • Gonzales
  • Bartlett
  • Benton
  • Tan

I can’t remember anymore how many students were in each section unfortunately. You can guess my intellectual capacity by the section I was assigned to: Tan.

My experience in section Tan is quite a nice one. As evidenced by the existence of this newsletter, I was with a bunch of people who were smart enough to get into UP Diliman but not that uptight or snooty enough to parade their intellectual abilities to others. That’s quite a long-winded way of saying they’re a bunch of smart clowns.

I don’t know what they’re status in life are now, nor do I care. That’s not a dismissal but a way of saying that I don’t care about their current station as long as they are happy. But yes, do let’s try hanging out sometime.
