This guy (according to the Haribon field guide it’s most likely a male) is among the first birds I’ve recorded. I was very elated videoing him. Sounds creepy, but whatever.

As per Wikipedia, there are 20 recognised subspecies of black-naped orioles. I’m not 100% certain but based on my location I’m willing to bet it’s the nominate subspecies O. c. chinensis, found on Palawan, Luzon, Mindoro and satellite islands (western and northern Philippines).

The bird and its call is quite distinctive; once you know, you can’t help but notice. In my area, they are not as numerous as lowland white-eyes and yellow-vented bulbuls; I occasionally see around four to five of them flying, their plumage adding an intriguing flash of yellow in the sky. I hear them around 07:00 to 09:00, their beautiful cries piercing the morning silence. Unfortunately, I was not able to film them again as of writing this, making me treasure the video all the more.
